True confession, readers: in some ways, I am really, really naive.
I mentioned a while back on Twitter that my idea of a perfect birthday gift would be one whole day of uninterrupted reading. When I first thought of the idea last spring, I started brainstorming ways to make it happen. With my husband and Small Fry at home, I knew I wouldn't be able to have my read-fest in residence. I would get too distracted with their fun and games, plus I am very susceptible to "oh, after I finish this chapter I should probably do at least a few of those dishes" when I'm around the house.
I was at work one day, mulling this over, and I decided the best thing would be for me to get a hotel room. Just for the day, no overnight. That way, I could bring my books to the room, lock myself in, and read quietly for hours at a time with NO distractions.
Sounds awesome, right?
I started doing some Google searching. For daytime hotel bookings.
After clicking on just a few links, I realized...that this was a horrible idea. And that my office was likely going to cut off my internet access if I kept doing searches like this one.
If you're naive like me, let me elaborate: there is really only one reason why people book hotels during the day. And it has nothing to do with fine literature. It has LOTS to do with illicit affairs, though.
When I got home that day, I confessed my Googling blunder to my dear husband. Who subsequently laughed his arse off, and has not let me forget about it since. ("Honey, can I have a free hour to read this weekend?" "Sure, maybe you could look into getting a hotel room for a few hours. I could call a couple johns for you too.")
WHATEVER, GUYS. I REALLY JUST WANTED TO READ ALONE FOR A FEW HOURS. Is that such a crime?? :-P

Bahahaha! You are adorable! ;) You may have stumbled onto a million dollar idea though! Perhaps a hotel that caters to busy women? I'd pay for a few quiet reading hours ;)
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people would! Hmmm. This could be the idea I bring to Shark Tank.
Deletehahahahaha. HILARIOUS!!!! And I am guessing that the hotel room would not be a quiet experience with all the loud noises coming from other rooms. HAHAHAHA. Okay I will stop laughing now...
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHAHA.
Okay maybe not. Add in the fact you are pregnant makes this story even better as I picture you pregnant with a couple books walking into a pay by the hour hotel. seriously so funny.
Where did you end up getting these free hours of reading? Library?
I got a few free hours at the library. Good but not quite the same, I can't stretch out on the library's couches and gorge myself on candy bars while I read. LOL.
DeleteLMAO, I love it!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome! I hope you still got a whole day of uninterrupted reading!
ReplyDeleteI got a morning's worth at the library, a close second! :)
DeleteOh, as someone who's always been pretty naive myself, I totally get this. I remember once a couple years ago telling my husband that I wish there were swings for adults. Now I obviously meant the kind of swing sets you see for kids, only reinforced for the extra weight, with the seats suspended higher off the ground for longer legs... because who doesn't love swings! He, um... reminded me that adult swings do exist, just for a less innocent purpose.
ReplyDeleteI love going to the library to read. No distractions. (Well, a very different set of distractions...)
LOL @ the swings!! I would totally say something like that and not realize the implications...
DeleteThe library is wonderful of course, though I do get easily distracted there, and my new library doesn't have many comfortable places to stretch out for a long period of time.
Bwahahahaha This made me snort. I instantly thought ohmyword she just probably came up with a list of the seediest hotels ever.
ReplyDeleteHahaha well I'm glad you caught it before I (obviously) did!
Deletehahaha! I didn't immediately get why a hotel for the day was a bad idea, either. :) Hope you get your day of reading. I have the same problem trying to read at home, too.
ReplyDeleteI got a morning of reading at the library, which was nearly as good. :) Reading at home can be so difficult sometimes!
DeleteI can relate! The best part of going to Las Vegas with my husband on his business trip a couple of years ago was spending long mornings reading in the hotel room with the coffeemaker going while he went to conference meetings and such.
ReplyDeleteOnly a true bookworm would say that while they were in Vegas!! :)
DeleteYou post made me smile! Then giggle. Than LOL. Too cute. Hope you got some uninterrupted reading in, cause as soon as baby #2 gets here........time will be even harder to find. Just sayin'
ReplyDeleteOoooh don't I know it. That's probably the #1 reason why I made this as a birthday wish! :)
DeleteHahaha, what a fun story! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteHA! I love this!! Thanks for the laughs!! Just what I needed today!! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha- the second I read that you were looking for daytime rooms I knew you were going to find trouble! But I agree, the idea of a day of uninterrupted reading sounds great. Maybe a park? Coffee shop? Library? Car parked on a deserted street?
ReplyDeleteI think part of what made it hard for me this year is that I am pregnant, and it's hard for me to get comfortable for a long period of time in a place where I can't stretch out (coffee shop, library, car, etc). Park might have worked though, didn't think of that!
