What I Was Reading When I Wasn't Here (and, Hi!)

And Lord knows it's been a while since I've been here!

Sorry for the protracted absence, reader friends.  I told ya this was likely to happen though, what with me in school, and child in school, and toddler in full force, and making time for me + husband, and running, and this freaking election (don't even get me started), and just EVERYTHING.  All the things.  There are too many things.  So yes, I have been absent.

However, I have been reading!  I just haven't been blogging about it!  Which has been weird (since I've blogged about EVERY book I read between August 2012 and...6 weeks ago), but also very liberating.  I just fly through books when I have the time, and don't worry about how I will review them.  It's rather wonderful, in fact, even though I know that doesn't bode real well for the blog...though I'm still staunchly NOT shutting it down, for whatever that's worth.

Anyway, instead of full-on reviews, I thought I would highlight the best of what I've read lately, in a very short and sweet list...plus let you know about the one book I've been reading forever, but have yet to DNF.

The Best of What I've Read Lately (with exceedingly short descriptions):

Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

RELEVANT IMMEDIATELY.  READ NOW.

The Mothers by Brit Bennett

New release by a debut author, the hype in the blogosphere was justified.  Plus, I like pretty things, and the cover is a very pretty thing.

In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10, both by Ruth Ware

Mystery and debauchery!  Lots of red herrings!

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie (my first Christie!)

The queen of Mystery and Debauchery and Red Herrings!  I was not disappointed.

Why I Run by Mark Sutcliffe

Runners need to read this one.  It helped me get out of a running slump and pushed me to sign up for a marathon (again).  More on that in another post...

And...The Book I Have Been Reading Forever:

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon

I dunno guys.  I am starting to think this series is not for me.  Been at this since August?  September?  I still have 300 pages to go.  Determined to do it, but it might be a while before I think about picking up the third installment.

So, readers, catch me up...what are you reading lately?  Have you read any of the books I listed above?  What should be next on my ever-expanding TBR list?

Also, send Joe Biden memes.  All the Joe Biden memes.  #UncleJoe

  1. I read IN A DARK DARK WOOD, too. After all the raving reviews I read of this book , I was surprised at its predictability. Almost from the beginning I could tell that one of two, maybe both, of the characters would be key to whatever problems this story had in store. By the time I read the first half of the book, I had no doubt.

Four women and one man meet at a home "in a dark, dark wood" for a "hen party," what we would call a bachelorette party in the U.S., for one of the four women, Clare. They are all friends of Clare, although Nora, whose first person account this is, knows only one of the others.

The author, Ruth Ware, is good at building suspense almost from page one. So the reader will look at all the characters suspiciously at first, even though nothing horrible happens right away. But when something really bad does happen, the guilty party is obvious, even though only about half the story is told.

For this reason, I do not rate IN A DARK, DARK WOOD highly.

  2. Welcome back, glad to know you have been reading, that is great. I read Woman in the Cabin and wasn't thrilled, I couldn't decide what to write and gave up on doing a review, would have rated it 3star. I have been considering Dark Dark Wood but way to many books out there really, right. I look forward to reading Small Great Things, talk about timing for the release of this book.

Must read books for you - Behind Closed Doors, BA Paris, The Word Game, Steena Holmes, MJ Alridge series and Robert Bryndza series to name a few :-)

  3. I read the first Outlander book years ago. I liked it. I didn't like it enough to devote my reading time to the thousands of pages the series is at this point.

(And I, too, am devouring all the Biden memes this week.)

  4. The Woman in Cabin 10 is on my TBR. I've read (& reread) lots and lots and lots of Christies over the past 50 years. Loved almost every one of them. I recommend you continue with something of hers!

  6. I really enjoyed your short reviews! When I first started blogging, I reviewed everything I read, but now I do enjoy letting myself off the hook every once in a while :)

  7. I enjoyed The Woman in the Cabin 10 even more than In a Dark, Dark, Wood. That makes me really excited, because that means Ware is getting better and better. I am excited to continue following her career.
