Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Can't Believe I Never Read

It's time for a little Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish!  Today we get to pick any past topic, so I went with

The Top Ten Books I Can't Believe I Never Read

1. Any of John Irving's books

I know, I know.  I really need to get on this.  The World According to Garp is the book that's been on my Goodreads TBR list the longest.

2. Bitter Is The New Black by Jen Lancaster

I hear amazing things about Jen Lancaster all the time!  I love funny books!  Why have I not read this yet?

3. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I have it sitting on my bookshelf at home, it's been recommended to me a million times.  I don't have a good excuse.

4. Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Haven't seen the movie either.

5. Salem's Lot by Stephen King

As a King fan, this one is the hardest to admit.  I plan to rectify that soon, in time for Halloween!

6. Go Ask Alice by Anonymous

All the Banned Book Week talk about this book is making me feel like I need to move it up the TBR list.

7. The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson

Another book that is recommended to me all the time.  And I loved Larson's In The Garden of Beasts!  I need to get to this.

8. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Apparently I did not have a normal childhood, if I managed to miss this.

9. A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle

See above comment.

10. Moby Dick by Herman Melville

It just feels like something I need to read.  As a reader.

So, what books can you not believe you never read?  Also, feel free to leave me shaming comments.  They will motivate me to read these books!!

  1. I need to get around to reading Outlander, too. It's supposed to be excellent.

  2. Beth, so true! But it is still hard to fight my need to read all the things. :)

  3. I haven't seen or read Gone with the Wind, either.

  4. I always feel bad that I haven't read The Book Thief or A Handmaid's Tale yet. I also have never made it through Pride and Prejudice, but I long ago decided that I'd tried hard enough with it and gave up hope that I'd ever read it or enjoy it!

  5. The Book Thief was good, but not quite worth all the hype (IMO). The Handmaid's Tale is pretty awesome though! A
s for P+P, I feel that way about Middlemarch. Everyone tells me it's an amazing classic, but it was making me miserable and I couldn't continue. Ah, well.

  6. I've read Gone with the Wind but I haven't seen the movie, much to my chagrin...

I read a lot when I was a child, but I don't know how I managed to skip A Wrinkle in Time... Hmm.

I've never made it through any Charles Dickens, excluding Great Expectations, which I read in school. He's too prolix for my taste, I suppose.

  7. Gone With the Wind is great... ditto for Narnia and Jen Lancaster!

To a PP - I'm currently struggling through The Book Thief. So far I'm really having a hard time getting into it.

  8. Oh, I had never heard about Go Ask Alice. Another book added to my "I can't believe I haven't read this" list :)

  9. I haven't read most of these books either. I have read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (I liked it but never wanted to read the rest of the series), and A Wrinkle in Time. But none of the others.

Good luck on reading all these. :)

  10. I somehow missed Chronicles of Narnia as a kid -- which is really weird because I read The Screwtape Letters at, like, 14. How did someone not tell me about Narnia?

  11. I read Bitter and hated it. I think you need to read your Stephen K read, you are a fan right lol get to it.

  12. If it makes you feel better, I didn't read The Chronicles of Narnia until I was in my early 20s. I did read A Wrinkle in Time back in the day. Though it's been so long, I feel like I should reread it because I imagine there's much I've forgotten. Haven't read any of the others though. I personally love Jane Austen, but if you start a book and find it hard to finish, don't worry about not finishing it! Good gracious, life's too short to read stuff you don't like. (that's my theory and I'm sticking to it!) ;)

  13. I haven't read The Chronicles of Narnia either, wish I'd known about them when I was younger but apparently... I didn't. ;)

  14. Comments:

I've read a couple John Irving books and liked neither of them. Too wordy. So don't feel bad if you never get to them.

GONE WITH THE WIND is a very easy book to read. Don't put it off.

If you loved Larson's In The Garden of Beasts, you'll love THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY even more.

    I can't believe I've never read:

GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, A FAREWELL TO ARMS, FRANKENSTEIN, and WAR AND PEACE because they've been in my bookcase forever.

  15. Kara, I agree with your assessment--life is too short to read books you don't like!! :) (Jane Austen is pretty great though)

Techeditor, I've read A Farewell to Arms (eh) and War and Peace (disturbingly long, but very good). No Gulliver's or Frankenstein yet (though I'm considering Frankenstein for this month!).

  16. I SO want to read Outlander as well but know that it will be quite the time committment--especially as I'll probably listen to them. Devil in the White City is a great one. I've been meaning to read more Irving, too. I have read Garp but really want to read Owen Meany.

  18. Just read Outlander and don't let the first 50 pages put you off. Just read it...then move on to Gone With the Wind and the Narnia Chronicles...get moving, go on, get started..of course once you finish Outlander, you will move on to the other six books and be ready for the eighth due out fall 2013

  19. The time commitment to Outlander does worry me. I actually own the first 4 books already, so I know when I finish the first, I'm going to want to dive into the others.

  20. Huh. I'm not much better either...I'm reading Salem's Lot now, never finished Moby Dick, will be reading A Wrinkle In Time as soon as my copy arrives...I also felt that, as a blogger and avid reader, there are titles that I absolutely have to read, but a while ago I stopped torturing myself with books that just don't resonate with me.
